Attended the Sixteenth Session of the Working Group on the Legal Development of the Madrid System for the International Registration of Marks 【NEW】

From July 2 to July 6, 2018, two members of the Japan Patent Attorneys Association (hereinafter “JPAA”), one from the Trademark Committee and the other from the International Activities Center (an affiliated organization of JPAA), attended the sixteenth session of the Working Group on the Legal Development of the Madrid System for the International Registration of Marks in Geneva, Switzerland.

55 Contracting Parties such as Japan, the EU and the U.S., 14 observers such as Canada and Saudi Arabia, 2 international intergovernmental organizations and 10 non-governmental organizations including JPAA took part in the session. The Working Group actively discussed the agenda items such as “Replacement,” “Transformation,” “New Types of Marks and New Means of Representation,” “Findings of the Questionnaire on Limitations of International Registrations under the Madrid System,” “Proposed Regulations under the Protocol Relating to the Madrid Agreement Concerning the International Registration of Marks” and “Language Regime Under the Madrid System.”

JPAA expressed opinions regarding the agenda items of “Transformation,” “New Types of Marks and New Means of Representation,” “Findings of the Questionnaire on Limitations of International Registrations under the Madrid System,” and “Language Regime Under the Madrid System,” which would have an impact on Japanese Madrid users.
